Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy - A Non-Invasive Treatment Tailored to You

At Richard and Armstrong Optometry, we actively promote vision therapy as method for correcting certain eye alignment and other visual concerns.

The practice is becoming increasingly popular across the United States as individuals, particularly adults, seek to take charge of their own recovery and empower themselves through vision therapy.

Young Minds Are Open to Therapy

Children are more prepared than adults to give therapy a try, and, with a little direction from their parents, stick at it. It is most commonly used for:

  • Correcting eye alignment
  • Improving eye teaming
  • Helping kids master hand/eye coordination
  • Improving visual acuity, without the use of corrective lenses

A Long-Term, Long-Term Plan

The key to successful vision therapy is the development of an individualized program of eye exercises, aimed at correcting a specific problem with your vision. We will talk to the child, perform various non-invasive tests to confirm our diagnosis (this will be a standard children’s eye exam, just to ensure that we are treating the right condition) and then, by virtue of our considerable experience in the field, create a several month long program.

So What Is Actually Involved?

Vision therapy is unlike any other corrective procedure. Where glasses or contact lenses simply do the work for you, vision therapy teaches the eye (and the brain) how to correct itself. Like how physiotherapy can be a replacement for traditional surgery, so too can vision therapy correct problems like lazy eye or a refractive error.

Solutions are never as simple as “you have that condition, do this exercise”. Our techniques may involve computer-assisted visual activities, the use of filters or prisms to help train the eye, or even things such as balance boards or metronomes. We have a huge range of techniques at our disposal, and will only use those which apply directly to the patient.
The type of conditions for which vision therapy is often recommended includes:

  • Amblyopia, AKA ‘lazy eye’, which affect your normal visual acuity
  • Strabismus, where both eyes are not properly aligned, causing difficulties reading or viewing distance objects
  • Eye movement disorders which arise during reading or similar close-up activities
  • Focusing disorders
  • Binocular vision problems

Adults Can Benefit Too

Our techniques are largely the same for adults and children, though determined adults can bring a diligence and commitment to their program beyond what children can usually manage. Despite the brain being a bit more stubborn in adults compared to children, we can still see substantial progress correcting refractive errors and conditions such as lazy eye.
